Amazon Rises to 14 Percent of the Tablet Market Share

While we all know how popular the iPad is, Amazon is stealing the show with their rapid rise in sales. Research firm IHS iSuppli has released shipping data from 2011. The Kindle Fire rose to 14 percent of the tablet market share in the fourth quarter, pushing it to second place. Following Amazon is Samsung in third place, Barnes and Noble in fourth place, and Asus rounding out the top five. Apple still has the lion share of the market at 57 percent, but they have dipped down from 64 percent in the third quarter.

IHS iSuppli reports that Apple lost some of those sales to themselves, with some customers opting for the iPhone 4S instead of an iPad. However, the Kindle Fire is popular because it is much more affordable at $199 than the iPad. While it is noted that these numbers are for shipments, not for actual sales, it’s still enough action for Apple to sit up and take notice.

The release of the iPad 3 will shake up the tablet  market once again, but with the cheaper price and good functionality of the Kindle Fire and other Android tablets, the future is wide open for competition.

Droid RAZR MAXX just $199 for new customers on Amazon

Droid-RAZR-MAXX-630

The Droid RAZR MAXX just became available for purchase earlier today on Verizon’s site for $299 and here we are with a sale already. Amazon Wireless is offering to shave $100 off the top for new Verizon customers and get you out the door for a more palatable $199.

If you are an existing customer you can upgrade for $229, which isn’t a bad deal either. It does show as being on backorder at the moment, but based on past experience they usually ship on the early side of their estimates.

For those that somehow missed our previous coverage of the Droid RAZR MAXX then I’ll give you the elevator pitch for it quickly. For all intents and purposes it is the original Droid RAZR which we reviewed back in November, but with a 3300 mAh battery that may result in over 24 hours of battery life.

I’ll be getting my hands on the Droid RAZR MAXX tomorrow and will follow up with our full review soon. In the mean time, check out a super quick hands-on with the RAZR MAXX from this month’s CES (filmed with a Galaxy Nexus).

3300mAh battery… More of this please manufacturers. I can handle my phone being a couple mm thicker.

The nice thing is that it’s still only 8.9mm thick which may be obese by original RAZR standards, but it’s still thinner than almost anything else in the lineup.

Yea, would love to throw away the extra charger I keep at work…

Wow, battery life sounds great! I’m constantly having to recharge right now.

Go get this guys. $100 is good amount.

If you sell Android for $300 it is not easy to compete with iPhone. Motorola guys – understand this first!

How do online sites sell the exact same phone for $100-$200 less?
Do I gain anything, anything at all, by shopping at my local Verizon store?

Warrant?
Returns?
Anything?

Sorry, the big catch to buying through the 3rd party sites is that you are subject to multiple early termination fees if you try to get out of the contract. You do have 30 days to return the phone without being subject to any penalties, but beyond that you would get hit by an ETF from both Amazon and Verizon.
