Sony Introduces 3D-capable Cyber-shot Cameras

Looks like the 3D craze is coming to Sony's digital cameras too, as the company has unveiled three new Cyber-shot cameras, the TX9, WX5, and the T99. The TX9 and WX5 have a rather interesting 3D Sweep Panorama feature, which allows them to create a 3D image that is viewable (in 3D) on a supporting computer or TV. Another neat feature is Sweep Multi Angle that uses 15 different angles to create a 3D image that can simulate 3D even on the camera's 2D display. Other features include a 12.2-megapixel CMOS sensor, 10FPS burst mode, and Full 1080p HD video recording. The TX9 opts for a touchscreen control, while the WX5 uses the more traditional manual controls. Both the TX9 and the WX5 will be available in September for $400 and $300 respectively. The T99 was also announced, which is a more basic digital camera, boasting a 14-megapixel CCD sensor, supports Sweep Panorama mode, 3-inch touchscreen, and will be priced at $250.

60beat introduces GamePad accessory for iOS gaming

type="html">

Smartphones may not be as suited for gaming as traditional handhelds from Sony and Nintendo, but that isn't stopping iOS and Android from dominating the mobile games market in terms of revenue. A number of factors have contributed to this phenomenal growth, such as the high adoption rate of new smartphones and tablets, and the super cheap prices for quality titles compared to those for dedicated portable gaming systems.

But for all the convenience of smartphones and tablets, we can hardly say that relying on touch controls is ideal for gaming. With that in mind a company called 60beat has launched the 60beat GamePad, which connects through the headphone jack to enable console-like controls on your iOS devices.

It sports a similar design to Sony’s PlayStation 3 controller and the button configuration is rather similar as well -- there are a couple of analog joysticks, a D-Pad, 10 action buttons and 3 menu buttons. The GamePad draws power from your iDevice, eliminating the hassle of changing dying batteries and making it heavy to hold.

Games have to be programmed to support the new device and so far only 2 titles support it: Bugdom 2 and Aftermath. But the accessory maker says a "full collection" of supported games will be added in February 2012. The 60beat GamePad is priced at $49.99 and is compatible with the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Leica introduces V-Lux 3

Leica introduces V-Lux 3

Leica has announced the V-Lux 3, a 12.1 million pixel superzoom camera featuring a 24x optical zoom lens.

Equivalent to 25-600mm in 35mm format, the Leica DC Vario Elmarit lens has a maximum aperture of f/2.8. The sensor has been newly developed and is designed especially for capturing images in low light at high speeds.

The V-Lux 3 is also capable of high-speed continuous shooting at 12 frames per second at full resolution, or 60 frames per second at a resolution of 3.5 million pixels, making it one of the fastest burst shooting cameras in its class.

A range of video functions are also available, including full HD video in AVCHD format at 60 frames per second. Footage can also be directly recorded in MP4 format for use directly on mobile phones and on the web. The 24x zoom range is available during video recording, with an integrated stereo microphone equipped with an electronic and noise filter.

Screen

On the back of the camera, a 3 inch, 460,000 pixel LCD screen can be found. The monitor can be twisted and turned in almost any direction, designed for shooting from awkward angles.

Featuring an integrated handgrip and made from light weight material, the V-Lux 3 has been designed to work well when shooting with one hand and includes clearly laid-out controls for fast and easy operation. Video recording, for instance, can be started and stopped at the touch of a button on top of the camera.

Coming as an optional accessory, a strong, black camera case provides protection for the camera and is made from the same hard-wearing and water-repellent material used on convertible car roofs.

Software

Packaged with the V-Lux 3 is a comprehensive software suite which includes Adobe Photoshop Elements and Adobe Premiere Elements. Both are made available as free downloads from the Leica website after registering the camera.

The camera comes with a two year warranty and one year Leica UK 'Passport' to provide complimentary accidental damage cover, while customers are invited to visit the Leica Store and Akademie in Mayfair for a free demon on how to use the camera.

The Leica V-Lux 3 UK price is £690 RRP, while the outdoor case will be available for around £135. Availability is due to begin in the UK from January 2012.

Via introduces QuadCore processor for notebooks

Via managed to get some buzz going on when the Isaiah architecture and Nano processor were first introduced back in 2008. But even though early benchmarks seemed promising performance-wise, Intel had the upper hand when it came to power consumption and quickly took the market by storm. It was only this year that AMD came out with a competitive alternative for netbooks and budget laptops and now it seems VIA is ready to give it another go.

Following the introduction of its Nano X2 processor back in January, which is a dual-core implementation of its Isaiah architecture built on TSMC's 40-nm chip fabrication process, VIA is now introducing the QuadCore processor combining a pair of Nano X2 chips on a single package to deliver a low-cost, low-power alternative to Atom and Brazos.

The pair of Nano X2 chips are connected by a shared 1333MHz FSB and each has two 1MB independent L2 caches, for a total of 4MB of L2 on-package. Initially VIA will be introducing a single model of the QuadCore, known as the L4700, which is rated for 1.2GHz operation and a maximum TDP of just 27.5W. The QuadCore can dynamically clock up to frequencies as high as 1.46GHz, however, provided there's enough thermal and power headroom available, thanks to a new feature called Adaptive Overclocking that appears to work very much like Intel's Turbo Boost.

The chip is designed to run multimedia, productivity and Internet applications, according to VIA, and will be pin-to-pin compatible with Via Eden, Via C7 and Via Nano E-Series and Via Eden X2 processors. The company offered some results from its own internal benchmarks compared to an AMD E-350 APU, and the QuadCore seemed to have a clear advantage in CPU intensive tests, encryption, and some multimedia as well.

In terms of power consumption Brazos and Atom still have an advantage, though, not to mention that with less than 1% of the x86 market VIA lacks the market pull of Intel or AMD. But it's still interesting to see some more competition in the market and we're eager to see if they manage to score some design wins from major notebook vendors. You can read a bit more about the QuadCore and take an inside look of VIA's simulation labs over at AnandTech and HardOCP.
