Looking forward to the 2012 Olympic Games in London? It certainly seems that Acer is, earlier today it announced the Iconia Tab A510 Olympic Games Edition to mark the occasion. Early signs suggest this is nothing more than some smart marketing as the technical specifications appear to be identical to the forthcoming Iconia Tab A510. The only notable difference is cosmetic and consists of a discreet Olympic rings silver logo on the rear of the tablet.

For those of you who missed the details of the original Iconia Tab A510 the first time around, here’s a quick reminder of the highlights :-

Android 4.0 Ice Cream SandwichNvidia Tegra 3 quad-core processor with 1GB of RAM10.1″, 1280 x 800 touch screen16GB, 32GB and 64GB storage options9800 mAh batteryAcer says that the Olympic Edition Iconia Tab will launch in the UK around the same time that the 2012 Olympics kick off, there is no word yet on international availability. There’s also no word on pricing at this time but we would hope that it won’t be any higher than the  €399 ($522) listed for the standard edition.Check out the full press release below and be sure to let us know in the comments if the Olympic branding adds any additional appeal to this high-end Android tablet.

Acer Introduces the ICONIA TAB A510 Olympic Games Edition – This ultimate tool for the road features very long battery life, quad-core performance, and mobile productivity toolsHANNOVER, GERMANY

Acer introduces the ICONIA TAB A510 Olympic Games Edition. Celebrating Acer’s partnership with the Olympic Movement, the design unites the Acer and Olympic logos, and is available in black or silver. The ICONIA TAB A510 is the company’s newest Android Ice Cream Sandwich-based tablet. It features 15 hours of battery life for true all-day usability, a powerful NVIDIA® TEGRA® 3 quad-core processor, and the latest tools for mobile productivity, sharing and more.

The ICONIA TAB A510′s 9800mAh battery supports up to 15 hours of HD video playback. The extra power doesn’t add bulk to the tablet because parallel battery packaging keeps it slim.

A powerful NVIDIA® TEGRA® 3 quad-core processor executes a smart workload distribution with more power and less battery consumption. It handles heavy multitasking, HD videos, console-like gaming, and faster web browsing, while a fifth “companion” core takes care of low-power tasks like music playback and active standby.

Mobile productivity apps include Acer Print, which makes wireless printing easier with support for various document formats, photos and web pages. Acer Print is compatible with 87% of brand-name printers on the current market.

Polaris® Office, meanwhile, is optimized for tablet-based work. It provides practical improvements for editing and reading MS Office documents on the go.

Noise suppression and echo cancellation technologies enhance audio recording, and video calls in HD Voice are excellent. Superior audio enjoyment for music, movies and more comes courtesy of Dolby® Mobile 3+ with premium 5.1-channel HD output.

The ICONIA TAB A510 Olympic Games Edition starts a series of products that Acer designed specially for the Olympic Games in London. Available for consumers starting from March, this is the perfect tablet for cheering on your favorite athletes during the biggest sports event of 2012.

LG Announces Wireless Charging Cradle, WCD-800

"> 0by Emily Aquin
tagged LG, MWC 2012, qi, WCD-800, wireless charging

LG has noticed the wireless charging dilemma, and taken action. Wireless charging is great for avoiding a messy tangle of cables, but in the past, the positioning of the phone left us mostly unable to use our phones while charging. At MWC 2012, LG revealed its WCD-800 wireless charging cradle that will get rid of the wires, and let you use your phone while it’s getting juiced up. The cradle will work in landscape or portrait mode, so you can browse the internet or squeeze in a round of Angry Birds while your phone is charging.

The WCD-800 will work with the new phones that LG has announced at MWC 2012, along with devices that will work with the Wireless Power Consortium’s Qi standard. Its predecessor, the LG WCP-700, had a much smaller charging contact area with the phone, so it charged slower. This new cradle will be just as fast as a conventional wall charger, according to LG.

At first, the WCD-800 will only be available in Korea, but North America should see this gadget in the first half of 2012. LG has not released any pricing.

Tweet atom-z2460 The new dual-core Atom Z2580 from Intel

Intel has announced a major overhaul of its Medfield smartphone processor platform here at MWC 2012, adding two new Atom chips to its line-up.

The Atom Z series, which was unveiled at CES 2012, previously only featured the Z2460. That was a single-core chip based on the 32nm Penwell architecture famous for powering phones, tablets, low-cost PCs, netbooks and nettops.

The silicon giant has now added two more chips to its line-up, the dual-core Atom Z2580 and a low-cost Z2000, which is aimed at emerging markets.

Two-core hyperthreading

The Atom Z2580 features two cores that run at an improved 1.8GHz, but most importantly, has 4 hyperthreads, which act as virtual cores, enabling better performance when multitasking. While it's not a quad-core processor, hyperthreading enables the processor to split its power effectively, designating one thread to any given task.

Intel will hope that its hyperthreading capabilities can offset the gains made by Nvidia and ARM on the swathes of quad-core handsets that have been announced at this year's Mobile World Congress, such as the HTC One X and the Huawei Ascend D1, while delivering better battery life and power efficiencies.

Those power savings chiefly come thanks to the 32nm architecture, which enables the chip to run more efficiently than rivals using larger dies. With ARM Cortex A9, the chip at the heart of Tegra 3, running at 40nm, Intel-based handsets has the ability to make real gains in battery life, and still deliver top notch performance for media and games.

Intel smartphone reference design

Aside from raw processing power, the Atom Z2580 has a dual-core graphics core clocked at 533MHz built into the Penwell SoC architecture, and 4G LTE.

Medfield's original single-core release raised questions about Intel's ability to compete, and the likes of Nvidia have been keen to shout that more cores equal more power. However, benchmarks of the original Z2480 processor have shown that not to be the case. Medfield's smart throttling of power, large dynamic range, and burst modes for intense work-loads revealed huge gains in terms of power efficiency and battery life.

Itel's mefield atom range

Intel will be hoping that their dual-core update can retain the efficiencies of the original Medfield chip, and compete with the likes of Tegra 3 in terms of processing power.

The Z200 uncovered

The Z2580 has also been accompanied by a low-power Z2000, which should bring the technology of the original Atom Z Series to the developing market.

The Z2000 is essentially a hobbled version of the original Z2460, featuring a single-core 1GHz Atom processor, supporting a 300MHz graphics core, 720p playback and up to 8MP rear facing camera.

The sub-$200 market is a huge opportunity for Intel to make a serious play, in a space which is dominated by some pretty poor offerings. Most of the low-cost handsets by the likes of ZTE, Huawei and Lenovo use ARM 9 and ARM 11 chips, and the emergence of a 32nm Intel processor into this space could make a huge difference in terms of market share.

Intel hopes to have its new Z2580 and Z2000 Atom chips into smartphones by mid-2012.

2. @demonhighwayman - Architecture is far more important than raw power or number of cores. Intel's CPUs are all faster than AMDs, simply because the architecture and design of the CPU is different, even if the AMD CPUs match (or in most cases, beat) the Intel CPUs in terms of raw power. Same thing here.

The Lenovo K800 has an Intel Atom Medfield architecture instead of the traditional ARM-based ones. It's only got 1 core, clocked at 1.6GHz, but it was 3x faster than the Exynos dual-core CPU found in the Galaxy S2. The reason is simply because of not raw power, but architecture. Don't judge something you haven't tried before because it doesn't sound as impressive, because these Atom CPUs will surprise you

1. Intel seem rather far behind. This IS a dual core cpu - last years newest thing. Even taking HT into account spliting the 2 cores up, that is still only a quad core running at 800mhz, where as all the arm based cpus this year are quad core's running at 1200mhz-1500mhz.

With all intel's knowledge and experience you would think something a bit more impressive could have been achieved.

US Cellular Announces Initial 4G LTE Markets, Devices

by Brian Klug on 2/1/2012 1:04:00 PM
Posted in smartphones , US Cellular , LTE , Samsung , Galaxy S Aviator , Galaxy tab 10.1

Not to be left in the dust by their big national counterparts, regional carriers are also moving onward to 4G LTE, and US Cellular today announced its initial 4G LTE markets and two devices. US Cellular has made a coverage map tool visible with its initial rollout markets, and noted that additional market announcements will happen later this month. US Cellular also makes note of its intent to deploy 4G LTE onto 700 MHz spectrum licensed to King Street Wireless.

A quick check on the spectrum dashboard indicates that indeed US Cellular will likely deploy 4G LTE into a host of 700 MHz Lower A and B block licenses, both of which are 5 MHz FDD. A quick spot checking of the announced markets revealed that most are regions where both lower A and B are held, though Des Moines Iowa has both A and B, so it seems as though 5 MHz and 10 MHz FDD will be the name of US Cellular's LTE game.

King Street Wireless National 700 MHz Spectrum Holdings

The two devices US Cellular has in store are the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 LTE, and the Samsung Galaxy S Aviator, the latter of which looks virtually identical to the Droid Charge we've already reviewed. No doubt the Aviator will turn out to be based on the same hardware platform given the similar choice of air interfaces shared between Verizon and US Cellular (CDMA2000 1x/EVDO and 4G LTE).

-Brian Brian Klug Reply US Cellular has AWS-1 to deploy to also... by Doormat on Wednesday, February 01, 2012 US Cellular holds a decent amount of AWS-1 spectrum as well, and they could deploy LTE there too. Doormat Reply abkfenris by abkfenris on Thursday, February 02, 2012 Any word on how the current US Cellular - Verizon roaming agreement will work out for Verizon LTE users? I end up roaming back and forth constantly at home (in Maine) on 3g or 1x, so if LTE could roam seamlessly it would be great.

US Cellular still seems to have better service up here, so if sometimes if VZ is unfortunate, you just need to hide better before it will hop to a good US Cellular connection. abkfenris Reply Subject Comment Post Comment Please login or register to post a comment.
