Leica X1 Digital Camera Review

Still remember the Leica X1 that we mentioned in September 2009? PhotographyBLOG has a short review of this 12.2-megapixel compact digital camera. As a reminder, the Leica X1 comes equipped with a 36mm fixed lens and a 2.7-inch LCD screen. The camera uses an APS-C sized (23.6mm x 15.8mm) CMOS sensor with a 3:2 aspect ratio. The image-stabilized Leica Elmarit 24mm f/2.8 lens provides a focal length of 36mm in 35mm terms. Additional features include a sensitivity range of ISO 100 - 3200, a maximum shutter speed of 1/2000th of a second, JPEG and DNG RAW file support, and a continuous shooting rate of up to 3 frames per second. Here is the conclusion:

The Leica X1 is a camera of extremes, offering a compelling blend of stunning design, fantastic handling and superlative image quality, but ultimately suffering from a pared-back feature set, sluggish responsiveness and a sky-high price-tag. The combination of a fantastic prime lens and large APS-C size sensor result in outstanding image quality that easily beats most other compacts and also most other entry-level DSLRs. Low-light images are excellent too, with the X1′s faster ISO settings delivering low-noise results. Add the ability to shoot DNG RAW files as well as JPGS, and it’s clear that the X1 is a real class-leader.

You can purchase the Leica X1 digital camera for around $1,995 each. [PhotographyBLOG]

Leica launches magazine app

Leica launches magazine app

Leica has introduced a new photographic magazine for users of its S-System, which is available via an iPad app.

S-Magazine showcases the latest work by professional photographers using the system, with editorial portfolios and current advertising campaigns being the main focus.

Prominent international photographers, along with information on the latest trends in commercial photography will also be included.

The magazine is already available as print edition, but this is the first time it will be available in digital form and is launched in conjunction with the new online portal for S Photographers, S-League.net.

Photographers

In the first issue, renowned fashion photographers Joachim Baldauf, Straulino and Manuel Pandalis are featured and offer their own perspectives and on using the Leica S camera system.

It is hoped that the magazine will give photographers using the S System a good place to showcase their work to broad and international audiences.

The Leica S2 is the premium camera manufacturer's medium format £20,000 camera. It features a Kodak-made 16 bit 30x45mm CCD chip sensor with 37.5 million effective pixel resolution.

Back in August, Leica introduced a new range of accessories for the camera, including an adapter which allowed users to attach a variety of medium-format lenses from other manufacturers to be attached to the S System.

S-Magazine is available to download now from the App Store for free.

Leica introduces V-Lux 3

Leica introduces V-Lux 3

Leica has announced the V-Lux 3, a 12.1 million pixel superzoom camera featuring a 24x optical zoom lens.

Equivalent to 25-600mm in 35mm format, the Leica DC Vario Elmarit lens has a maximum aperture of f/2.8. The sensor has been newly developed and is designed especially for capturing images in low light at high speeds.

The V-Lux 3 is also capable of high-speed continuous shooting at 12 frames per second at full resolution, or 60 frames per second at a resolution of 3.5 million pixels, making it one of the fastest burst shooting cameras in its class.

A range of video functions are also available, including full HD video in AVCHD format at 60 frames per second. Footage can also be directly recorded in MP4 format for use directly on mobile phones and on the web. The 24x zoom range is available during video recording, with an integrated stereo microphone equipped with an electronic and noise filter.

Screen

On the back of the camera, a 3 inch, 460,000 pixel LCD screen can be found. The monitor can be twisted and turned in almost any direction, designed for shooting from awkward angles.

Featuring an integrated handgrip and made from light weight material, the V-Lux 3 has been designed to work well when shooting with one hand and includes clearly laid-out controls for fast and easy operation. Video recording, for instance, can be started and stopped at the touch of a button on top of the camera.

Coming as an optional accessory, a strong, black camera case provides protection for the camera and is made from the same hard-wearing and water-repellent material used on convertible car roofs.

Software

Packaged with the V-Lux 3 is a comprehensive software suite which includes Adobe Photoshop Elements and Adobe Premiere Elements. Both are made available as free downloads from the Leica website after registering the camera.

The camera comes with a two year warranty and one year Leica UK 'Passport' to provide complimentary accidental damage cover, while customers are invited to visit the Leica Store and Akademie in Mayfair for a free demon on how to use the camera.

The Leica V-Lux 3 UK price is £690 RRP, while the outdoor case will be available for around £135. Availability is due to begin in the UK from January 2012.
