First Look: Samsung's Galaxy Nexus smartphone with Android 4.0 OS

Samsung's next generation Galaxy handset is the first to run on Google's Android 4.0 - Ice Cream Sandwich.

Finally, the announcement the world has been waiting for.  A new version of the Android operating system and the first handset that will run it.

Android 4.0 is nicknamed :Ice Cream Sandwich” and is the first version of the operating system that will run on both smartphones and tablets.

And Samsung's Galaxy Nexus will soon be the first device to be able to take advantage of 4.0's new features.

This announcement was supposed to have been made more than a week ago at the CTIA Show in San Diego. But, a few days before the scheduled event Samsung and Google gave the excuse that they didn't want to announce this super-phone just days after Apple's Steve Jobs died.

I don't buy it. I think it was more likely they decided to have the announcement provide for a big splash on its own – not as part of a small industry show.

After looking at the specification for this new device it looks like Samsung's Galaxy Nexus could be considered the most super-smartphone of all – more super than all of the other new handsets to hit the U.S. market in the past few weeks – like Motorola's Droid Razr, HTC's Amaze 4G or even Samsung's own Galaxy S-II line.

The Galaxy Nexus has some pretty nice components including a Texas Instruments 1.2GHz dual-core processor, a HUGE, 16-by-9, 4.65-in Super AMOLED+ display (1280 by 720 pixels, capable of delivering 720p video), a  BIG,  1,750mAh rechargeable battery, 1 GB of RAM, either 16 or 32GB of storage plus a 5 MP, rear-facing camera that can shoot 1080p video.

Wi-fi, Bluetooth, GPS, NFC, an accelerometer, gyroscope and compass are givens. This phone is also set to come with a barometer as well.

There will be two 4G variations of the phone. An HSPA+ and LTE versions will be available depending on the region where you live.

As for the new software, Android 4.0 will bring lots of Ice Cream Sandwich goodness to the mix. Just about everything has been rethought and redesigned. That includes a whole new look and feel to your Android home screens (with the new Roboto typeface throughout) and a better notifications scheme as well as improved multi-tasking throughout.

As for new apps there's an improved version of Google+, something called Face Unlock which is actually a facial recognition application, a new People app that will take full advantage of a phone's new “Android Beam” NFC capabilities.

The new Galaxy Nexus phone – with Android 4.0 – will start being sold in the United States, Europe and Asia beginning next month.  The only carrier mentioned at the press conference was NTT-DoCoMo in Japan.
