Aesir, a Danish luxury handset maker, claims to have made an "indestructible phone" to last a lifetime.
The company said the device is made of everlasting surgical-grade steel and costs $8,000, despite lacking a touch screen and apps. The phone is only able to make calls and send texts.
"There's a long tradition in Denmark to build things that will last," said Thomas Moller Jensen, Aesir's founder. "So we tried to design our mobile phone like you would a chair, boiling it down to the essence of what it should be."
This phone isn't Aesir's first attempt to create a timeless piece for the luxury mobile market. Its AE+Y phone, made to last from 18-carat gold and priced at $57,400, targets Russia's "fashion-forward elite," despite lacking Web, gaming or camera support.
Aesir is catering to a growing market for luxury handsets, which despite technological advances, continue to remain popular in their most simple forms for monetary reasons.
TAG Heuer too created the "Link Phone" from steel and 18-carat rose gold or titanium, covered by calf, alligator or lizard leather with optional diamond trim. Heuer's $6,700 creation is not as timeless as Aesir's models, however, since it runs Android 2.2, which Google recently eclipsed with its Honeycomb update.
Nokia's 18-carat gold-plated C7 model with a sapphire-studded home key and Scottish leather lining departs from its rivals' simplistic models, boasting an 8-megapixel camera and 3.5-inch touchscreen.
Its elaborate Anna version of Symbian, however, may date this phone before its owners have a chance to recoup the cost. Nokia ditched its Symbian platform in favor of Windows and will likely not support its discarded OS for much longer, likely angering those who spent thousands on the phone.
Those who invest in GoldVish's diamond-encrusted, 18-karat white gold, $1.3 Le Million handset will be happy to learn it is a simple feature phone unlikely to lose its relevancy with time.
