Crucial announces 'Adrenaline' hybrid storage kit with 50GB m4 SSD

Although solid state drives aren't as pricy as they used to be, they're still considered somewhat of a luxury. With some success, manufacturers have attempted to bridge the gap between flash drives and mechanical storage with hybrid solutions such as Intel's Smart Response Technology and Seagate'sMomentus XT drives. Determined to show its rivals how it's done, Crucial has entered the arena with a slightly unique contender that makes it easier to boost the performance of your sluggish hard drive.
The company's new "Adrenaline Solid State Cache" package contains a 50GB m4 SSD, a 3.5-inch adapter and software that caches your most frequently access data. The beauty of this setup is that it doesn't require you to purchase anything other than Adrenaline kit to boost the performance of your existing hard drive. By comparison, the Intel's offering requries an SRT-ready chipset to link cache and storage drives, while the Momentus XT is more of a replacement hard drive with extra cache.
To configure the cache drive, you only have to connect the m4 to your motherboard and power source then boot your machine and install the caching software to link your flash and mechanical drives. The caching application is fully automated, runs in the background and requires no user management, according to Crucial. We haven't seen pricing details, but the m4 occupies the budget end of the market with a 64GB model costing about $110 or $1.72 per gigabyte, about as cheap as you'll find for such a unit. With that in mind, we're hoping the Adrenaline kit is under $90.

Windows 8 adds RAID-like storage pooling and fault tolerance

An interesting article has been posted to the MSDN blog, thoroughly outlining a new Windows 8 feature called "Storage Spaces". The technology will allow users to create a single storage volume from multiple storage devices. The feature also allows users to dynamically expand a Storage Space volume by adding more devices on the fly. Storage Spaces affords users this freedom by cleverly organizing used and free space across NTFS volumes. 
For example, Windows 8 users will be able to lump together any mixture of storage devices into a single volume that appears as D:\. If a user gets low on space, they can simply pop in another hard drive or plug in another external drive and Storage Spaces will expand D:\ to include the new device. More importantly, it does this without losing data.
Storage Spaces allows NTFS-formatted devices to be combined into "pools" and broken apart into "spaces". Pools are collections of storage devices that work similarly to JBOD RAID arrays (just a bunch of disks) while spaces are more analogous to partitions. Unlike JBOD arrays though, the feature also protects your data from drive failure. Similar to RAID 5, Storage Spaces utilizes parity data to provide a fault tolerance strategy.
Although they share a lot of common ground though, Storage Spaces is not a RAID solution. TheFAQ states:
Fundamentally, Storage Spaces virtualizes storage in order to be able to deliver a multitude of capabilities in a cost-effective and easy-to-use manner. Storage Spaces delivers resiliency to physical disk (and other similar) failures by maintaining multiple copies of data. To maximize performance, Storage Spaces always stripes data across multiple physical disks. While the RAID concepts of mirroring and striping are used within Storage Spaces, the implementation is optimized for minimized user complexity, maximized flexibility in physical disk utilization and allocation, and fast recovery from physical disk failures. Given these significant differences in objectives and implementation between Storage Spaces and traditional inflexible RAID implementations, the RAID nomenclature is not used by Storage Spaces.Currently, hardware and software technologies which offer similar benefits do exist, such as LVM, ZFS, Drobo, higher-end RAID controllers and so on. However, Storage Spaces appears to offer a great deal of flexbility and simplicity, simultaneously. The feature is, at the very least, a huge improvement over the current implementation of "Dynamic Disks" found in Windows.
Storage Spaces will effectively be the "consumer" version of Drive Extender, a deprecated feature of Windows Home Server. However, the blog points out it is not intended to be a feature-by-feature replacement and is incompatible with existing Drive Extender volumes.

Storage Media Used for the Data Backup

In this information technology era everybody will have heart the term “Data Backup”. The backup of any data is not any thing it is the copy of the original data that will be used to recover the data back when corruption is made. Data loss is the very common problem in this technical age. According the survey 66% of internet users have suffered for the data loss situation.

There are many types of data backup on the basis of their uses, details contain, size and many more. Some of them are given below:

Choosing backup type is totally depends upon the user, he/she will decide which backup is the best backup for his/her data. Unstructured backup does not recover complete data because it has very small details. Full system backup is the best backup to restore the complete data because it contains all information related to the data. It is very costly in comparison of any data backup.

Different types of storage media are available to store the data backup. These storage medias are used when the data gets corrupted by the any of reasons like virus attack, hardware problem, suddenly system shutdown, errors which storing the data and many more. Some of the popular storage media is given below:

Magnetic Tape: It is mostly used for interchange the data, data storage and archiving. The main feature is it store data for the decade in comparison of others.

Hard Disk: The main advantage of hard disk is low access time. It is easily available and cheaper. Day by day the capacity versus price ratio is improving.

Optical Disk: Some optical storage media allows for cataloged data backup without any human contact with the disk. It allows longer data integrity.

Floppy Disk: It is used in the 1980 and early 1990s. Due to limited storage capacity it is used by the personal computer users. It is not more popular in comparison of others to store data.

Solid State Storage: It is also known as USB flash drives, thumb drives, flash memory and secure digital cards and many more. These devices are very costly in comparison of the other storage media.
