Samsung Mobile looks to be taking a leaf out of the book of its comrades in the TV business by developing a new smartphone with a bezel-less display.

Reports emanating from South Korea on Friday suggest the company is working on the Samsung Galaxy B which will be its first smartphone to boast an edge-to-edge display.

The Maeil Business Newspaper says the as-yet-unconfirmed Galaxy B's display will engulf the entire face of the device, save a small area at the top to house a speaker and a front-facing camera.

Reports suggest that, if that were the case, Samsung would be forced to ditch the rounded corners which have appeared on its flagship handsets as of late.

Is this really the Galaxy S3?

Of course, the Galaxy B could turn out to be the Galaxy S3, with much of the speculation surrounding that device pointing towards a bezel-less display.

In the company's CES wrap video, Samsung showed-off an unidentified device which boasted an edge-to-edge display of sorts that many believed to be the Galaxy S3.

The MBN report says we should prepare for a Q2 or Q3 launch which fits in with the latest estimates for an S3 release.

Rovio Working on a Non-Angry Birds Game

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably played one of the many iterations of Rovio’s extremely popular Angry Birds games. The Finnish company has been very successful marketing this game on all platforms, and merchandising the heck out of the game’s lovable birds and pigs. They’ve been in movie talks and even teamed up with Korean police to help combat bullying. These little guys are literally everywhere… except, apparently, in Rovio’s next game.

In a recent interview, Rovio CEO Mikael Hed spilled the beans that they are working on a new game that is not an Angry Birds spinoff, and it will be out “in a couple of months”. That’s pretty much all he said about it, so no further details are known at this time.

Let’s hope the new game’s characters are as lovable and merchandisable as these birds are. I’d expect nothing less from Rovio.

Microsoft is putting money into 3D development work destined for the Xbox console range.

After the disappointment of an E3 no-show and news that Microsoft won't be launching the Xbox 720 until at least next year, we're hungry for information about what the new system could include.

Microsoft has recently posted a job ad for an "Algorithm Research & Development Engineer for XBOX team." The role involved working in Haifa, Israel, with Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business division.

Responsibilities for the position include "algorithm design and implementation into state of the art 3D imaging systems working in an integrated HW and SW leading team, working closely with peers in Redmond, and being part of a fast moving and growing development team."

It's all Kinected

The Interactive Entertainment Business division was responsible for the Xbox Kinect and specialises in Natural User Interface (NUI) or, in other words, gaming without the controller.

The Xbox 360 has no 3D capabilities and Microsoft has shown no interest in developing upgrades for it, so the next generation console is likely what this 3D work is destined for.

As more and more homes buy into 3D TV, the launch of the Xbox 720 could see 3D gaming hit the big time.

2. great more cheesy crowd pleasing "non-3d" 3D that you will switch off after few minutes. All I ask for is a superb 2D! real time light /reflection effects, physics, all in 60fps. I guess it's too much to ask. We need to be fed with Netflix/3D/adverts/skype/kinect and all sort of apps that we will never use. Whatever sells to as many people as possible so the profit is higher.

1. The PS3 does 3d gaming now of course. 3d gaming is fine as a novelty, but you soon turn it off as all it does is detract from the gameplay itself (and makes everything look gloomy & amplifies motion sickness). Even the best example, Killzone 3, is better off played in flat-o-vision.

BBC working on Android iPlayer app update

The BBC has been hard at work overhauling its iPlayer apps, but it's bad news for Android users waiting for the latest features.

3G streaming has been added to the iPad and new iPlayer app, but still isn't present in the Android option - something the Beeb is hard at work on, according to the blog.

"We have also been working on the BBC iPlayer Android app. We have got a bit more work to do to improve the video playback experience and add 3G streaming and we will be releasing an update to the BBC iPlayer Android app in the new year.

"For the time being the Android app will carry on working with Wi-Fi connection only."

Android unloved?

Some Android users might feel a little galled that the iOS options are being given preferential treatment over Google's platform, but the stats show there are 1.2 million installs on Android devices, but 1.5 million on iPads alone - with that number set to dramatically increase with the launch of the iPlayer app.

However, while the UI tweaks will be welcome, the 3G streaming isn't going to affect too many people, as networks clamp down on user data allowances - a couple of BBC programmes could wipe our your MB hoard in one go.

However, 3G streaming will be brought to the mobile website, so if your device is compatible (and many are these days) you'll be able to trigger warning emails over your data allowance in no time.
