Acer has taken the wrapper off of one of the phones it will be showing off at MWC 2012 – the Acer Liquid Glow.

This Android handset comes with Ice Cream Sandwich straight out of the box, and is set to be one for the budget crowd.

When it comes to specs, the Acer Liquid Glow has a 3.7-inch screen, 5MP camera on the rear with LED flash and NFC functionality.

The phone is using NFC in an interesting way, with something called Android Beam technology. Through this app you will be able to share photos, contacts, apps, music and video.

Fluid features

There's no word as of yet what kind of processor the phone is packing but don't expect this to be a powerhouse.

It is available in a number of colour options, though, which sound more like a toilet cleaner options than real colours. These include: Sakura Pink, Alpine White and Cat's-eye black.

Although the Liquid Glow is Android 4.0 from the off, you will have to wait some time for the handset to be in the shops. This is because the Acer Liquid Glow UK release date has been pegged for early summer.

LG Optimus Vu Officially Announced Ahead of MWC 2012

The LG Optimus Vu was rumored to be officially announced at Mobile World Congress 2012, but it appears that the anticipation was too much for LG to wait until February 27 to tell you about their 5-inch beast. The LTE tabletphone, or phablet, has a 4:3 aspect ratio display which will make viewing pictures, reading a book or web browsing easier in portrait mode.

Some of the main specs are:

1.5GHz dual-core processor32GB internal memory2,080 mAh battery8 MP rear camera5 inch IPS LCD display, 1024 x 768 resolution, 4:3 aspect ratio8.5mm thickThe Optimus Vu will also feature a built-in QuickClip button for one touch screen shots, and a specialized stylus. It will initially have Android 2.3 Gingerbread, but LG promises Ice Cream Sandwich within three months.

LG says the Optimus Vu will be available in Korea in March, but did not specify any release dates in the rest of the world. They will have additional information on the device at MWC 2012.

Moreover, IPS display realizes every color in its natural state for the best viewing experience even under bright sunlight.

Backed by unparalleled speed and performance from LG’s advanced LTE technology, the Optimus Vu: boasts unmatched productivity. Its unique built-in QuickClip™ hotkey allows users to conveniently capture screenshots and memos with a single push. Jotting notes is also possible with a finger or with the dedicated Rubberdium™ pen. The Alienware X51 has been officially announced, with the gaming brand offering up a desktop with a small form-factor that is aiming to tempt in the groups between casual gamers and hardcore.

The X51 brings a decent set of specs and the always-enviable Alienware design but packs it into a form-factor that is only marginally bigger than an Xbox.

"I don't personally believe you can offer a system that offers a better gaming performance within that form-factor or even that there is anything close, " Eoin Leyden, Alienware's senior product consultant told TechRadar.

Range

As you would expect the Alienware X51 comes in a range of specs with the lowest priced version at £699 bringing an 3.3 GHz Intel Core i3-2120, Nvidia Geforce GT545 graphics, 4GB of DDR3 RAM and a 1TB harddrive.

At the other end of the spectrum is the £999 version with 8 Gigs of RAM, Intel Core i7-2600 and Nvidia Geforce GTX 555 graphics. That will give you up to 77 frames per second from Battlefield 3, according to Dell-owned Alienware.

The smaller form factor is aimed at the mass market, and it has been designed to stand horizontally or vertically - so you could sit it next to your TV without it looking too out of place.

It's certainly an unexpected move from a company that has previously specialised in massive high-end rigs - but can it take advantage of the recent renaissance in PC gaming?

1. I think this is a brilliant idea- most non-pc gamers I know avoid PC gaming 'cause they think it's too problematic and complicated, and Alienware's big rigs were too daunting to many of them.

With the smaller form factor, maybe it will seem less daunting- and a lot of my mates use their TVs as a monitor, so the smaller size may make that even more useful.

O2 Lease: smartphone rental scheme announced

We're forever trying to think of ways to give our mobile phone networks more of our hard-earned cash so we're pretty excited about O2 Lease, a new scheme from O2 which allows you to rent a handset for a year for the princely sum of £55 a month.

For more than the cost of a contract that allows you to keep the phone at the end of it, you could borrow a handset from the network which you then have to give back at the end of the year.

As well as temporary ownership of a smartphone, anyone signing up to O2 Lease will enjoy 750 minutes, unlimited texts, 500MB of data and insurance for their £55 a month.

Please, take my money

If you take into account the fact that O2's smartphone insurance usually costs £15 per month, we suppose it's not too outlandish – but you can get smartphone cover from other outlets for about £5.99.

We know it's only Monday, but let's look at the maths: £55 a month for a year equates to £660. O2 also offers, say, the Samsung Galaxy S2 for free on a £47 a month 18-month contract – that comes to £846 over the course of 18 months.

So you get the same phone to keep, same data, more minutes (900) and the same texts over the course of eighteen months for just £220 more than 12 months of the leasing scheme, at the end of which you don't get to keep the phone.

Considering the Samsung Galaxy S2 is worth £449.99 from O2 SIM-free, even if you add on £6 of insurance a month to the contract cost, it doesn't seem like particularly good value to us.

The upside is that there's no upfront payment when you stroll into an O2 store to take out the lease - and we're interested to see if consumers really do care about owning their smartphone, when most simply keep their old ones at the end of a contract as a spare should their fancy new one die or get lost.

Sally Cowdry, marketing and consumer director for O2, reckons it's a pretty snazzy deal though. She said, "This is the first time a UK mobile operator has adopted a leasing model.

"We know that customers and small businesses are used to leasing everyday items from cars and washing machines to photocopiers and office space.

"We have simply taken this idea and applied it to the smartphone market."

The Spy Files - Wikileaks spin-off announced

At a press conference in London today, Julian Assange announced that a spin-off version of Wikileaks has been created to publish documents which refer to surveillance and privacy violations around the world.

Aptly called The Spy Files, the subsection of Wikileaks houses hundreds of documents which bring to light apparent spying on a global level and the technology used to intercept personal content.

The site has launched with a damning critique of the 'unregulated' world of spying and name checks the use of mobile phones and Facebook for surveillance use.

Watching the watchmen

"Mass interception of entire populations is not only a reality, it is a secret new industry spanning 25 countries," explained the blog post.

"The WikiLeaks Spy Files are more than just about 'good Western countries' exporting to 'bad developing world countries'.

"Western companies are also selling a vast range of mass surveillance equipment to Western intelligence agencies. In traditional spy stories, intelligence agencies like MI5 bug the phone of one or two people of interest.

"In the last ten years systems for indiscriminate, mass surveillance have become the norm. Intelligence companies such as VASTech secretly sell equipment to permanently record the phone calls of entire nations.

"Others record the location of every mobile phone in a city, down to 50 meters. Systems to infect every Facebook user, or smart-phone owner of an entire population group are on the intelligence market."

In all there are 287 files on the site, with Wikileaks hoping its site will open the world's eyes to the corporations benefiting from surveillance.

"The Wikileaks Spy Files reveal the details of which companies are making billions selling sophisticated tracking tools to government buyers, flouting export rules, and turning a blind eye to dictatorial regimes that abuse human rights."
