Firmware Updates Bring Lion Internet Recovery to 2010 Macs

Apple has released a range of firmware updates that enable the Lion Internet Recovery OS restore feature across most of its 2010-vintage Macs, enabling easy reinstallation of the operating system in the event of a software or hardware failure.

Lion Internet Recovery, a feature which builds on the NetBoot technology in OS X Server, was introduced along with the 2011 MacBook Air and Mac Mini refreshes, and then extended to the rest of Apple's shipping Macs in the following months. Today's updates, which enable support for the 2010 iMac, the late 2010 MacBook Air, and the 15" and 17" 2010 MacBook Pro, follow updates from late January that enabled support for the 13" 2010 MacBook Pro, the 2010 Mac Mini, and the 2010 MacBook. The only model left out is the Mac Pro, none of which (even the currently shipping model) support the feature. Some (but not all) of the firmware updates also fix other minor issues.

The updates can be downloaded using the links provided above, or via Software Update - all updates require a Mac running OS X 10.7.2 or later. The possibility exists that Apple could choose to enable support for even older Macs - models going all the way back to 2007 are capable of running Lion - but until we actually see updates I would say that such a thing is pretty unlikely.

One allows recovery from the internet, one breaks your internet connection.

*shrug* requieminadream Reply RE: Ironic.... by name99 on Wednesday, February 08, 2012 Since I have 4 macs running 10.7.3 and they all connect to WiFi just fine on wake from sleep, I think you might want to be a little more nuanced in your claims.

The Airport SW update that came out just before 10.7.3 did very slightly change the name of the 5GHz WAN created by an Airport Base Station, if you are using separate names for the 2.4 and 5GHz WANs. I'd look there if I were trying to debug the problem --- easiest would be to go into Preferences/Network/Advanced/Wireless, remove your home WAN from the list, then reconnect to your home WAN. name99 Reply RE: Ironic.... by phoenix666 on Wednesday, February 08, 2012 I assume you mean WLAN whitch stands for Wireless Local Area Network. LG Prada 3.0 photos leak, bring black back

Looks like LG hopes that the LG Prada 3.0 will be the new black as far as smartphones are concerned, as leaked press shots show the fashion phone sporting a monochrome look.

The images don't give much away – we can see 3G connectivity, a stylised black-and-white Android overlay and a rear-mounted camera housed in a rather boxy form with a textured back panel.

However the leak comes with a little specification frosting: we're looking at a dual-core 1GHz processor, HD screen, Gingerbread 2.3, 8GB storage, HD video recording, a microSD slot, 8MP autofocus camera and NFC capabilities.

Prada-mark

The sneaky source that sent the pics to German site BestBoyz also let slip that there'll be some Prada-branded accessories alongside the handset, including a docking station and a case.

Given that the last images we saw of the Prada-branded handset were rather sketchy, this is the first time we've seen the phone in sharp focus.

But it won't be the last, as we're expecting to see the LG Prada 3.0 (variously known as the LG Prada K2) at a swanky event co-hosted by the two companies in London this evening.

Intel to Bring Augmented Reality to Smartphones, Tablets

Intel is working to include augmented reality technology in its processors, signaling future innovations in devices and computers that use its chips.

The U.S. multinational semiconductor company is reportedly partnering with Total Immersion to make gesture recognition part of its chipsets within the next few years.

"What we are doing together with Intel is working on their chipset," said Total Immersion marketing chief Antoine Brachet to Reuters. "You can have some AR features, like gesture recognition, that can be transferred from software to hardware."

Intel's decision to incorporate Immersion's technology into its semiconductor chips comes after the company was in charge of a nearly $6 million funding round for the company.

Augmented reality technology has been limited in tech products thus far. The Nintendo 3DS gaming system ships with AR cards that display 3D images on the screen using the device's camera.

In addition, Microsoft has been a leader in gesture control with its Kinect hardware that connects with the Xbox 360 to allow users to control games by making physical motions with their bodies.

Immersion's technology will allow for similar types of functionality in tablets, smartphones and PCs. Software companies like Microsoft, Google and other developers will have more tools when building mobile apps and programs, and consumers may end up having a very different user experience out of their products.

Intel's decision to work closely with Immersion is one the largest indicators yet that gesture controls and AR will likely be a legitimate part of several manufacturers' future hardware.

Now that Intel is preparing to dedicate itself to integrating Immersion's tech into its hardware, the ball is now in the court of the developers to show off their new chips' capabilities.

Fujitsu has announced that its plans to bring fibre optic next-gen internet to 5 million UK homes, with the communications giant working with Virgin Media, TalkTalk and Cisco.

The collaboration will see Fujitsu build what it is calling "ground breaking and innovative alternative to BT Openreach"

Virgin Media and TalkTalk will offer wholesale products via the network, and it will be opened out to other service providers.

Improving lives

Communication Minister Ed Vaizey said: "Superfast broadband is already helping businesses grow and improving the lives of those able to access it. But many rural and hard-to-reach areas are missing out.

"The whole of the UK should be able to share in the benefits of broadband and we are determined to make that happen by the end of the Parliament. That is why the Government is investing over £500m in taking superfast broadband to everyone.

"I am delighted that Fujitsu along with Virgin Media, TalkTalk and Cisco share the Government's vision. The collaboration between these companies was exactly the sort of ambition and innovation the Government wanted to stimulate by removing barriers to broadband rollout.

"Fujitsu and their industry partners are pledging a substantial investment in the UK and it represents a deep commitment to the future success of this country.

"Creating this superfast broadband network will help improve the economic and social prospects of the homes and businesses where high-speed internet access remains just a dream."

FTTH

Fujistus's network will see them running fibre to the home (FTTH) rather than to a local cabinet which means that the network is one gigabit per second symmetric capable from day one, with the potential to go to "10Gbps and beyond."

That's pretty fast.

"The plans rely on the remedy imposed by the regulator Ofcom, on BT Openreach, to provide access to its underground ducts and telegraph poles on fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory terms," added Fujitsu.

4. So the minority who live on a farm will have super fast broadband with the roll out paid for by the majority of people who already have some form of broadband having extra money stuck on their bill and getting a slower connection.

2. Agreed with chisy. I'm not living in a rural area, it's a reasonable populated town (just outside Blackpool) and I'm desperate to get above 2.5 Mbps. There are no plans for anyone bringing cable here as far as I'm aware.
