Tweet App downloads reaching dizzying heights

The Apple App Store is underlining its power in the world of applications with a huge milestone of 25 billion app downloads fast approaching.

The Cupertino brand is understandably proud of the achievement, which counts apps across iPod, iPhone and iPad.

To that end, it's offering up a $10,000 (£6,300) App Store voucher for whoever manages to become the lucky 25,000,000,000th downloader of an application.

Good luck spending that

We're not sure how you'd really be able to ever spend that much on apps, iTunes stock or iBooks - but Apple must be hoping that anyone who spends that much on its wares will stay an Apple user for ever.

The App Store only managed to get to 15 billion downloads in July last year, which means 10 billion apps have been snared in just seven months.

The debate over which is the most successful app portal still rages, with the likes of Android and Windows Phone both offering decent alternatives. However, with these numbers on offer, it's clear to see Apple is still on top of the application pile.

Mac App Store hits 100 million app downloads

Who puts the App in Apple? Well, Apple. But with good reason – not only has the fruit-flavoured tech company announced that it has 500,000 apps in its mobile App Store but it has also hit 100 million downloads from its Mac App Store.

That's a lot of apps, considering that the Mac App Store has only been live since January 2011.

Phil Schiller, Apple's senior VP of marketing, was on hand to offer his two typically sensationalised cents: "In just three years the App Store changed how people get mobile apps, and now the Mac App Store is changing the traditional PC software industry.

"With more than 100 million downloads in less than a year, the Mac App Store is the largest and fastest growing PC software store in the world."

App avalanche

Apple's release also casually reiterated the fact that the iOS App Store has seen over 18 billion apps downloaded, at a rate of around 1 billion a month, which suggests that pace hasn't changed much since early October when it first mentioned that fact at the iPhone 4S launch. But surely it should be up to over 19 billion now?

Updated: Humax Portal downloads begin, but Sky Player is missing

Humax has begun rolling out its OTA update bringing the internet-connected Humax Portal to its set top boxes; but Sky Player seems to be missing.

When we tested the service for our hands on Humax Portal review Sky Player was present and correct, but users are reporting that the Sky on demand player is not available after the software update.

Some channels were mysteriously absent from the Sky Player EPG on our beta version of the software, which Humax told us was due to rights clearance.

Update: Humax sent us the following statement to explain the absence of Sky Player: "Humax is still in the process of completing Sky Player tests, but didn't want to delay the launch of the Portal. Sky Player is expected to launch in a matter of weeks."

Rights negotiations to blame?

It seems that the these could have hit a bit of a snag and Sky Player has been completely pulled from the portal for the time being, although Humax would not comment on whether rights clearance is the issue.

Humax insists that Sky Player is expected to launch on the TV Portal within a matter of weeks, at which point the Portal will also be made available on Humax HD-FOX T2 set-top boxes.

The update that brings the Portal is available to Humax HDR-FOX T2 Freeview+ HD boxes this weekend, with the Humax HD-Fox T2 set top box update to follow.
