OnLive Desktop lands on Android tablets, brings Microsoft Office

Excel excitement ensuesTablets News By Jools Whitehorn 18 hours ago | Tell us what you think [ 1 comments ]

Tweet onlive Android users can get down to business

The OnLive desktop app first launched in January, offering iPad users remote access to a full version of Windows 7, including Microsoft Office.

Android tablet users can now join the Office party, "enjoying" Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, as well as Adobe Reader.

The service also promises cloud-enhanced web speeds of up to a gigabit, producing a cloud-accelerated connection that slashes page-loading and streaming speeds regardless of home Wi-Fi speeds.

Free basic service

The OnLive Desktop app is available now from the US Android Market for free, and there are a number of versions to suit your budget.

Desktop Standard is free, Desktop Plus is $4.99/month and Desktop Pro is coming soon at $9.99 along with 50GB of cloud storage. There will also be an Enterprise version for big businesses.

OnLive hasn't yet released details of when we'll see a UK offering, though we imagine it can't be far off.

You can see what we thought of OnLive Desktop on the iPad when we took it for a spin at CES in January, and check out the hype-tastic promo video for yourself on the OnLive Desktop site.

Microsoft releases full details of Windows 8 on ARM

Giving rise to "new class of PCs with unique capabilities"Operating systems News By Dan Grabham Thursday at 18:01 UTC | Tell us what you think [ 2 comments ]

Tweet windows-8 WOA will give rise to a whole new category of devices, says Microsoft

Microsoft has finally lifted the lid on Windows 8 on ARM, saying that it doesn't want ARM-based devices to be simply referred to as standard Windows systems with a different processor.

Instead, Windows 8 on ARM (known at Microsoft as WOA) will give rise to a whole new type of PC according to the software giant.

There are also some startling revelations about the Windows 8 ARM desktop, which you can read more about here.

In a Mary Branscombe interview for TechRadar, Windows head Steven Sinofsky about the announcement. "Windows on ARM, WOA, is a new member of the Windows family that is built on the foundation of Windows," Sinofsky told us.

"It has a high degree of commonality, a very significant amount of shared code with Windows 8. It's going to be developed for, sold and supported as part of our overall Windows ecosystem."

"We created WOA so that it would enable a new class of PCs with unique capabilities and form factors. It's a new level of device."

"It's up-levelling our ability to meet the consumer demand for a device that is reliable and performant over time. The canonical example is the reset and refresh feature and the difference between that and a clean install."

Read the full TechRadar interview with Steven Sinofsky.

2. What part is a "New Class of PC"? It's a Tablet PC, just like Windows XP Tablet Edition was before it and to some extent iPad and Android are too.

That is a PC in tablet form.

Microsoft 3D desktop with Kinect concept revealed

Get ready for your jaw to dropComputing News By Marc Chacksfield Tuesday at 11:06 UTC | Tell us what you think [ 2 comments ]

Tweet microsoft-3d-desktop-with-kinect-concept-revealed Desktop, Pimp My Ride style

Microsoft may be currently prepping Windows 8 for the world, but it has still found time to allow all of us a peak at what is to come in the near future, showing off a 3D desktop concept which uses Kinect functionality.

Shown off at its TechForum, the bods at Microsoft Research explained that the 3D-enabled desktop uses a see-through Samsung OLED screen and a Kinect sensor – combined they create a virtual desktop that can be controlled by swipes and gestures.

This isn't the first time we have seen a see-through OLED display from Samsung - it was also shown off in one of the company's own future-focused promos, where it was part of a flexible tablet concept.

Kinect, the best a man can get

According to the developers of the desktop, the Kinect sensor tracks all sorts of movement, including head and eye movement, as well as hand gestures.

Although the screen is 3D a normal keyboard is used for typing – so the desktop concept isn't completely motion-controlled.

It does look as if the future of desktop computing, however, is decidedly mouse-free.

Say what you want about Microsoft, the company has always been open about its future technologies – even if some of them never come to fruition.

We can only dream that Apple will one day operate the same way, but for now it looks as if Cook and co are very much working on their upcoming projects in a room with more security than the Pentagon.

Check out the video below, which shows Microsoft's 3D desktop concept in action.

2. The screen will be a bit close to your face and slipping your arms between the screen and monitor is a little cumbersome.

However, get that working with glasses/goggles that allow you more freedom of movement and this concept will be great.

Better yet, make the keyboard virtual so wherever you look when wearing the glasses your whole user interface goes with you. If they can detect when you're touching a virtual window I'm sure they can detect a virtual key press.

Then the PC is all tied up in your glasses. You could link up to your phone or tablet for mobile computing too. You might get some very odd looks from commuters as you interact with virtual objects of course. ;-)

Microsoft reveals a 'more accessible' Windows 8

New features for people with disabilities outlinedPC News By Marc Chacksfield Wednesday at 15:40 UTC | Tell us what you think [ 0 comments ]

Tweet microsoft-reveals-a-more-accessible-windows Windows 8 - access all areas

Microsoft's president of the Windows Division, Steve Sinofsky, has revealed a number of new accessibility features in Windows 8, explaining in a blog post that the new range of features will make Windows 8 better for everyone.

Sinfosky points out that there are a number of key features that have been addressed in Windows 8 that should make it easier for people with disabilities to use.

These include improving the assistive technologies within Windows and providing better developer tools that have accessibility built in.

Broad spectrum

"Windows 8 is a product we design for an incredibly broad spectrum of people around the world," said Sinfosky in his blog post.

"One of the areas where we have worked to deliver an even greater level of innovation is in ensuring that Windows 8, particularly the new Metro style experience, is accessible to everyone regardless of their physical abilities."

Some key Windows features have been improved, with the blog explaining that the Narrator element has been updated with user feedback and new languages, as has speech recognition.

Another key feature that has been improved is the screen magnifier. This has been given a touch makeover so users are able to control the feature completely from the edges of the screen they are viewing Windows 8 from.

Head over to the Microsoft blog now for more information on how Windows 8 is shaping up in terms of accessibility – especially if you are a developer looking to get in on the action - and be sure to also check out our hands on Windows 8 review. And if that's not enough for you, you can watch our Windows 8 preview video below too.
