Next generation of Android leakedMobile phones News By John McCann Monday at 10:49 UTC | Tell us what you think [ 5 comments ]
Tweet Who wants a piece of the pie?Key Lime Pie will be the successor to Android Jelly Bean in Google's mobile operating system life cycle, according to a source.
Ice Cream Sandwich (version 4.0) has only just got out of the blocks and Android Jelly Bean (version 5.0) is still months away, but speculation is already rife about what will follow.
Website The Verge received the tip from the same source which leaked the Jelly Bean name last year, however further details about a possible release or features were not disclosed.
Not to be confused with Quay Lyme πIt's not clear if Key Lime Pie will be a fully fledged version of Android itself, possibly 6.0, or a minor update from Jelly Bean which could see it sport version number 5.5 (or .4, .6, .7 – you get the idea).
Having seen Ice Cream Sandwich arrive towards the back end of last year and Jelly Bean expected to land later in 2012, we could well see Key Lime Pie feature on handsets next year.
Could Key Lime Pie bring together not only tablets and mobiles, but also computers to create an uber operating system for all platforms?
Only time will tell, but until we find out lets hear your wild predictions for Key Lime Pie's successor – desserts starting with L, go!

Secondly my galaxy s2 hasn't even got the ice cream sandwich update yet so why should I care about the version after the version after that! I suspect many android users are tiring of hearing about updates that are announced as being released but then take so long to be widely distributed that they have upgraded their device before the software actually becomes available....
Alert a moderatorbradavon4. It's standard to be working on the next big release whilst working on patches for the existing release.
I imagine Google haven't got any further than ideas and a name for the next instalment after the next instalment.
Mozilla for instance publicly document what each release is getting and due to time constraints why an earlier release isn't getting future features.
Alert a moderatorshauney33. It's all rumours, don't take them seriously.. Not even Google are this fast!
Alert a moderatorunlixes2. In fairness, they haven't actually provided either of these yet. From what I can tell they are still producing patches for ICS. Not that any of it matters to most Android users, since most are probably still back in the pre-Honeycomb days.
Actual fragmentation or otherwise, it's a shame Jelly Bean or Key Lime or whatever are liable to remain nice ideas for the majority of Android users, however new to the fold, for a long time. Roll on timely updates.
Alert a moderatorsimon_m1. Oh for goodness sake. I love when companies provide regular software updates, but this is just too fast. Chill out, Google, how about more patches for existing OS versions rather than flooding the market.
