RIM launches BBX QNX/BlackBerry smartphone platform

RIM has launched BBX, its new mobile platform that combines QNX for tablets and BlackBerry OS for smartphones

RIM has launched BBX, a tablet/smartphone hybrid platform that apparently mixes QNX and BlackBerry OS.

According to RIM, the new platform 'takes the best of the BlackBerry platform and the best of the QNX® platform to connect people, devices, content and services. takes the best of the BlackBerry platform and the best of the QNX platform to connect people, devices, content and services.'

RIM's president and co-CEO Mike Lazaridis commented, 'At DevCon today, we're giving developers the tools they need to build richer applications and we’re providing direction on how to best develop their smartphone and tablet apps as the BlackBerry and QNX platforms converge into our next generation BBX platform.'

The platform will support cloud-based services, suggesting the next iteration of BlackBerry will be more fully integrated with cloud services, just like iOS 5 with iCloud and Motorola's Droid Razr with its recently announced MotoCast.

BBX applications can be developed using the existing QNX and BlackBerry OS development tools, in addition to the BlackBerry Runtime for Android Apps that will star on future BlackBerry smartphones and tablets.

Another feature of the BBX platform is the Cascades UI Framework, supporting advanced graphics, deeper app integration and full push services.

RIM is currently holding its annual DevCon conference in San Francisco.
