Apple now expected to ship next iPhone in October

Apple is now expected to released its next iPhone, possibly called the iPhone 4S or the iPhone 5, in October. Previous reports claiming AT&T has blacked out employee vacations during the last two weeks of September in preparation for the retail debut of the next iPhone are wrong, according to sources with knowledge of the situation cited by All Things Digital.

Apple has reportedly had overheating problems with its new A5 chip, which is to be used in the company's new phone. The issue is cited as the main reason as to why Apple pushed back the next iPhone launch from the usual June timeframe into the fall.

The new iPhone is expected to be thinner and lighter than the current iPhone 4, and will be powered by Qualcomm's wireless chips. Rumors have previously said Apple's iPhone 5 will be an 8MP camera manufactured by Sony featuring dual-LED flash. Higher-resolution pictures and video will be better viewed on the device's rumored larger screen but thinner bezel.

Apple has been giving some developers access to a device known as the iPhone 4S — an iPhone 4 with upgraded internals. Some argue that's not the next iPhone, claiming the device will reportedly have a radical new case design.

The iPhone 5 was largely expected to arrive last month, given the iPhone's history, but was delayed. The first iPhone was released on June 29, 2007. The iPhone 3G was introduced on June 9, 2008. The iPhone 3GS was announced on June 8, 2009 and arrived on June 19, 2009 in the first countries. The iPhone 4 was announced on June 7, 2010 and released on June 24, 2010.

Two New Xbox 360 Accessories Announced

Microsoft has announced that it will be releasing two new products to it’s line of Xbox accessories. The Xbox 360 Wireless Headset with Bluetooth and the Xbox 360 Media Remote.

Similar to the Playstation 3′s Bluetooth headset, the Xbox 360 Wireless Headset w/ Bluetooth will allow you to chat over your Xbox or on the phone wirelessly, however, unlike the Playstation’s Bluetooth headset, the key feature in Xbox’s new Headset is it’s ability to be connected to your phone and your Xbox at the same time, taking multi-tasking to a new level. From the product description;

“With this all-in-one device, gamers can go from chatting with their friends on Xbox LIVE to talking on a Bluetooth® enabled mobile phone without changing headsets. The device is compatible with Bluetooth® devices such as mobile phones and PCs in addition to being able to connect to Xbox 360 through the console’s standard radio frequencies.”

To do this is a simple flick of a switch which will change the headset mode from Xbox to Bluetooth without having to disconnect from the device to switch over. The headset comes with a wide range of features as well, including Bluetooth 3.0 and Noise Cancellation. The battery is said to last up to 8 hours in-use or 300 hours on standby in a single charge.

The look of the device makes my old wireless headset look clunky, the new headset comes in a sleek black with the ‘Xbox 360′ logo on it making it look like the new Xbox 360 Elites.

The new Xbox 360 Media Remote is also a re-design of an older accessory. The Media Remote is a new and more useful take on the older Xbox Media Center Remote. What makes this remote an upgrade is the new ability to use the remote to control both your TV and your Xbox. The device will be supported by Hulu Plus, Netflix and ESPN as well as other Xbox Live programs.

Media playback controls include play/pause, skip forward, fast forward, skip back, fast back, and display to control DVD, CD, or streamed media. The TV controls include power on/off, volume up/down, mute and TV input. The Media Remote’s menu navigation controls include A, B, X, Y buttons, D-pad navigation, back and select. Live TV, if provided on the Xbox 360 by your TV service provider, can also be controlled with the Xbox 360 Media Remote.

The remote looks much like the headset in that it comes in slick black similar to the Xbox Elite look, however, I do not know if the buttons will light up like the old Media Center Remote did.

Samsung Galaxy S II sells over 5 million units in three months

The Galaxy S II first arrived in South Korea on April 29, 2011. The following month, it was released in other Asian and European countries, including Japan and the UK. Last week, the smartphone debuted in China.

Samsung's long-term, worldwide ambitions for the Galaxy S II are relatively modest: 10 million units in all of 2011, which is the number it sold of the original Galaxy S in 2010. At this rate though, the company will break that number very quickly.

The Galaxy S II runs Android 2.3 (codenamed Gingerbread) and features a dual-core 1.2GHz processor. It is the first handset to offer Samsung's Super AMOLED Plus screen technology (4.27-inch display, 800x480 resolution), and is the company's thinnest phone at 8.49mm, with a weight of just 116g. The device also features an 8MP primary camera with 1080p video capture, and a 2MP camera in the front, as well as integrated NFC support on some versions. It also has BlueTooth 3.0+HS and HSPA+ connectivity.

The device's new Live Panel allows you to aggregate web, social networking, and app content to a single customizable home screen. You'll be able to switch between three adjacent home screens by simply pressing and holding on the screen. The phone will come with four new content and entertainment hubs: music, games, e-reading, and social networking.

Adobe releases Flash-like HTML5 design tool Adobe Edge

Adobe Systems today announced the first public preview release of Adobe Edge, a new HTML5 web motion and interaction design tool available for free on labs.adobe.com for Mac and Windows. Web designers can use the tool to bring animations, similar to those created in Flash Professional, to websites using standards likes HTML, JavaScript, and CSS.

Because HTML5 is a moving standard, Adobe says it is adopting an open development methodology for Adobe Edge. For now, this means the company is releasing the software on the Adobe Labs website sooner than it would during a normal development process in order to allow user feedback to help shape the final product. Adobe Edge is not yet even considered in beta. It is being designed as a fast and lightweight professional-grade tool that complements Adobe's existing Web tools, such as Adobe Dreamweaver CS5.5, Adobe Flash Professional CS5.5, and Adobe Flash Builder 4.5.

The preview enables you to add motion to existing HTML documents without hampering design integrity of CSS-based layouts, and it also allows you to create visually rich content from scratch, using familiar drawing tools that produce HTML elements styled with CSS3. You can import standard Web graphics assets such as SVG, PNG, JPG, and GIF files and style them using CSS3. The design stage utilizes WebKit to enable design, preview, and manipulation of content. The timeline feature lets you define and customize motion applied to HTML elements. Content created with Edge is designed to work on modern browsers including those on Android, BlackBerry Playbook, iOS , HP webOS, and other smartphone mobile devices as well as Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari, and Internet Explorer 9.

"Over the last year Adobe has delivered on several significant HTML5 milestones including contributions to jQuery, submitting code to WebKit, and enhanced HTML5 output in Creative Suite 5.5," Paul Gubbay, vice president of Design and Web Engineering at Adobe, said in a statement. "Now, with Adobe Edge, we're taking our HTML5 tooling to a whole new level and look forward to getting some really useful feedback from the community over the next few months, as we refine the product."

iCloud beta available to devs, pricing revealed

On Monday evening, Apple granted developers access to iCloud.com, Apple's online home for its new online storage and synchronization service. The service is intended to provide ubiquitous cloud synchronization features across all Apple devices. iCloud is still in beta, but it is expected to be officially released alongside iOS 5 this fall.

The bells and whistles iCloud provides appear to be very simliar to MobileMe, but with a few core differences which Apple outlines here. iWeb publishing, Gallery and iDisk will not be available in Apple's new cloud system, however some new features will be taking their place: iTunes in the Cloud, Photo Stream, Documents in the Cloud and Backup and Restore. As you may have already suspected, iCloud will also still sync your contacts, calendars and email just like MobileMe does now.

Apple also released more information about storage options and pricing. iCloud comes standard with 5GB of free online disk space, however users will be able to opt in for three pemium storage plans: 10GB, 20GB and 50GB.

Plans will require an annual subscription and the formula appears to be $2.00/GB (USD). In other words, 10GB will cost $20, 20GB will be $40 and 50GB tops the service out at $100 per year. Interestingly, that is about twice as expensive as Amazon's Cloud Drive storage per gigabyte, although one can certainly argue that iCloud offers a more extensive set of syncing services geared specifically for Apple products.

A seemingly unusual maneuver for the company, it is also offering refunds for those who wish to cancel their service prematurely. Apple will be allowing a 15-day grace period for upgraded accounts and a 45-day grace period for yearly subscribers.

AMD has stopped Phenom II X2, X4 production

The latest rumor regarding AMD claims that the company has already pulled the proverbial plug on the production run for their budget-minded Phenom II X2 and X4 processors.

The rumor comes courtesy of Kitguru who claims to have heard “something very interesting about AMD’s traditional CPU lines”, although at the end of the article the author hints that the rumor could possibly be self-generated. Valid or not, the story brings up some very good points about the present and future of AMD’s processor lineup.

It’s extremely likely that AMD has plenty of X2 and X4 processors in inventory and the same can be said for outlets across the globe. Odds are also high that AMD could indeed halt production on these lines today and still have enough stock to feed demand and cover warranty claims. Moving production away from these aging pieces of silicon would free up resources that could be used to manufacture next generation Fusion and Bulldozer CPUs.

It's worth noting that this jives with inside sources cited by DigiTimes in late June. At the time, it was reported that Athlon II chips would drop from 70% of AMD's total processor shipments in the second quarter to 40% in the third, 30% in the fourth and the series would be retracted by early 2012. Various Phenom II chips were pegged for a similar fate with X2, X4 and X6 parts expected to disappar over the next six to eight months.

AMD Fusion APUs have been in production since 2006 when the company acquired ATI. AMD released theBrazos mobile solution in February and followed it up with Llano in June.

The 8-core Bulldozer-based FX-8130P has already been publically benchmarked last month. In general, performance seems better than Intel's top Sandy Bridge offering. Early indications point to a September 19 release date for the new FX-series processors.

Socket AM2+ Phenom II chips have been in circulation since December 2008 with Socket AM3 chips finding their way to market in February 2009.

Windows XP is a popular home for rootkits

Free antivirus software provider Avast has released information from a six-month study which reveals that Microsoft’s Windows XP operating system is home to 74% of their customers’ rootkit infections.

Data gathered from over 600,000 Avast customers pointed to Windows XP as the most vulnerable desktop OS for rootkits. XP, which was released in 2001, is the most widely used operating system to access the Internet according to w3schools.

The dated OS was installed on 49 percent of tallied Avast customers. 38 percent of users in the study were running Windows 7 while 13 percent had Vista installed. In contrast, only 12 percent of rootkits were detected on Windows 7 machines and 17 percent were found on Vista installations.

The problem doesn’t necessarily stem from the use of Windows XP itself, but from how end users obtain and install the operating system.

“One issue with Windows XP is the high number of pirated versions, especially as users are often unable to properly update them because the software can’t be validated by the Microsoft update,” said Przemyslaw Gmerek, the Avast expert on rootkits and lead researcher.

Rootkits are malicious tools that are installed before the operating system and anti-virus software are loaded, making them very difficult to detect and remove. Attackers use rootkits to steal data and install other programs without the user even knowing anything is wrong. Other types of rootkits present bogus antivirus warnings in an attempt to swindle credit card information from the user.

Most antivirus programs are useless in detecting rootkit installations. Users who suspect they might be infected are encouraged to try rootkit-specific removal tools such as TDSSKiller or ComboFix.
