Data centers use less power than anticipated

A new study conducted by a Stanford University consulting professor contradicts a 2007 report from the Environmental Protection Agency regarding future data center power consumption, despite the fact that data centers are being built at a record pace.
The 2007 EPA report suggested that data center power consumption would nearly double from 2005 to 2010. Estimated power usage was set at 100 billion kilowatt hours, resulting in a total cost of $7.4 billion.
The new report, prepared by Jonathan G. Koomey at the request of the New York Times, reveals that worldwide data center power consumption only increased roughly 56 percent from 2005 to 2010. In the United States, power consumption only increased by 36 percent.
A growing number of factors have led to the increase in data center usage over the past half decade. Cloud computing, content streaming services and the social networking boom have all contributed to the demand for more server space. Internet connected computer and smartphone ownership is at an all-time high.
On the flip side, the study points to several reasons why consumption didn’t hit the projected numbers from the EPA’s 2007 report. At the top of the list is the global recession.
“Mostly because of the recession, but also because of a few changes in the way these facilities are designed and operated, data center electricity consumption is clearly much lower than what was expected, and that’s really the big story,” said Mr. Koomey.
More efficient hardware is also partly responsible for lower numbers, although according to the New York Times, Mr. Koomey wasn’t able to separate the impact of the recession from that of energy-saving technologies.




Apple blocks Samsung tablet release in Australia

Apple’s legal team remains busier than ever as they continue to fend off what they deem patent infringements from rival smartphone and tablet manufacturers across the globe. This time Cupertino has put a stop to Samsung releasing theirGalaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia pending resolution of a legal dispute.

As reported by Bloomberg, Apple claims that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 violates no less than 10 patents and is too similar to the iPad. Specific patent claims include the “look and feel” and touchscreen technology.

Samsung claims that the Australian model of their flagship tablet is different than the US version and has even agreed to send three samples to Apple’s legal team for evaluation at least seven days before a planned release. The company had been announcing the tablet’s imminent arrival since July 20.

Samsung has agreed to postpone sales of the Tab 10.1 until a resolution can be reached or they gain court approval. Should Samsung win, Apple would be responsible for paying an unspecified amount of damages.

This is just the latest development in the Apple vs. Samsung legal saga that has been unfolding for several months in multiple countries. Earlier this year Apple sued Samsung in California over Galaxy phones and tablets which prompted a countersuit by Samsung less than a week later alleging patent infringement on their smartphone technologies.

Federal Court Justice Annabelle Bennett has scheduled a follow-up hearing for August 29. If no agreement can be reached by then, a trial date will be set.




Seagate releases Android app for its GoFlex Satellite HDD

Windows XP usage finally falls below 50% mark


At the end of July 2011, Microsoft can say that Windows XP finally fell below the 50 percent mark. In other words, Redmond's decade-old operating system is now used by less than half of all Internet users.
Windows XP's market share is eroding, and Windows in general is slowly slipping as well: between June and July, it fell 0.63 percentage points (from 88.29 percent to 88.76 percent). At the same time, Mac OS gained 0.22 percentage points (from 5.37 percent to 5.59 percent) and Linux gained 0.03 percentage points (from 0.95 percent to 0.98 percent). Unsurprisingly, mobile operating systems gained share.


In the same time period, Windows 7 gained 0.74 percentage points (from 27.13 percent to 27.87 percent). Windows Vista meanwhile slipped 0.28 percentage points (from 9.52 percent to 9.24 percent) and Windows XP fell 1.19 percentage points (from 51.13 percent to 49.94 percent). In about a year's time, we should see Windows 7 pass Windows XP altogether.
By the end of 2010, Windows 7 had grabbed 20 percent of the market and at the end of April 2011, Windows 7 passed the 25 percent mark. Last month, Microsoft announced that Windows 7 had sold more than 400 million licenses in the last 21 months. This means that Microsoft is selling just fewer than 20 million licenses per month. Back to school season is coming up, followed by the holiday shopping frenzy, so that number should remain stable till 2012 at least.
Although Windows 7 is growing its share very quickly, the ancient Windows XP is still dominating. Microsoft knows this and is making its own attempts to woo users off the platform. The software giant still supports those using XP, despite its hate for the ancient OS.
On April 14, 2009, Microsoft retired Mainstream Support for XP, and with it, support for IE6. The company is not planning to retire Extended Support for the operating system until April 8, 2014. If the company ends up releasing XP SP4 (highly unlikely), it will retire support for SP3 (released in April 2008) two years later, or in April 2014, whichever comes first. In short, Windows XP will continue to be officially supported by Microsoft for about three more years. Despite the support options, Redmond still wants XP and IE6 to die.
Three months ago, even the National Security Agency (NSA) began advising users to upgrade from Windows XP to either Windows Vista or Windows 7. Furthermore, the organization says that when possible, choosing a 64-bit version of Windows is recommended.




Logitech slashes Revue price to $100, focuses on Google TV version 2

Logitech has officially slashed the price of the Logitech Revue to $100 on its own website, and retailers have thus closely followed suit. Just three months ago, we noted that Amazon had cut the price of the device from $300 to $200. At this rate, the peripheral giant will be giving away the Revue for free before the end of the year (of course we're just kidding).

At the same time, Logitech has confirmed again that when Google TV version 2 goes live later this summer, all new and existing Logitech Revue users will automatically receive the update, which is built on Android 3.1 (codenamed Honeycomb). Google is hoping the update will give its platform a much-needed boost, but until then, it appears that sales expectations are still low. This (second) price cut for the Revue is a clear indication of that.

Google's partners are having trouble pushing Google TV as many consumers are finding the platform too complicated to use. For consumers, the update means that a simplified user experience and the Android Market is coming to their TV. For developers, the update means being able to use one SDK to ship apps that work both on Android tablets and on Google TV.

Google has hinted that new hardware from Samsung and Vizio is also coming, but hasn't shared further details. The two were rumored to have Google TV product announcements set for CES 2011, but those plans collapsed, and some even claimed Google was the one that delayed the products. Either way, there will soon be four hardware vendors for Google TV: Logitech, Sony, Samsung, and Vizio.

Ken Toyoda has spoken about the Nintendo servers having been attacked. User’s information was not compromised, nor was any of Nintendo’s own information.
In this recent intrusion, hackers gained access to the server at a Nintendo subsidiary. Further than that, the hackers did not appear to have any success. Toyoda is quoted as saying “There were no victims among the third parties involved. However, it is a fact that there was something of a cyber intrusion attack.”
Rumors were running amok during the recent PSN security breach. At first, the hacker group “Anonymous” was thought to be responsible. Speculation later shifted to a group called “LulzSec” which is shortened from Lulz Security, which refers, of course, to the confidence of the hackers. The title shows that they have a lot of confidence in themselves, implying they can laugh at security. If they were indeed responsible for the PSN crash, then that title is rightly earned. But now they have come under investigation for the Nintendo server access as well.
If these allegations are true, that LulzSec were behind both attacks on Sony and Nintendo, it shows that Nintendo user information is better protected. If they had similar security measures, the same group that took out PSN for over a month should have been able to do more than just reach the server without any data being accessed or compromised.

With an attack that has compromised as much as 100 million users accounts on the PlayStation Network Sony may be looking for more help. According to Cnet, Sony may be looking into offering a reward to someone who can provide more information on who the attackers are. The information of’course must also lead to the arrest and conviction of who is involved in the attacks.
Also according to the Financial Times, the group Anonymous may have actually been involved in some of the attacks against Sony despite their initial denials. The hacker involved with Anonymous was acting against Sony and it’s attack against George Hotz, they said in a statement:
“The hacker that did this was supporting OpSony’s movements,”
And also stated that:
“If you say you are Anonymous, and do something as Anonymous, then Anonymous did it,” “Just because the rest of Anonymous might not agree with it, doesn’t mean Anonymous didn’t do it.”
The rest of the members of Anonymous may not have agreed with the actions that certain members carried out but this attack gets the entire group involved. Anonymous does not plan to release any of the credit card information that was found or make it public in any way. According to Anonymous nothing was downloaded in a statement they made:
“No credit card information was ever exposed, neither was over 100 million accounts,” the Anon said. “They had access to their databases, yes, but nothing was downloaded except a few admin accounts. Nothing has been exposed, no one is selling anything.”
Rumors have also been circulating that a third attack may take place sometime soon but has not been confirmed or proven yet. If Sony does offer a reward for information we will have to see if anyone outs the person or persons that made the attack.




Ubuntu One Hits The One Million Users Mark – Upgrades Free Plan To 5 GB

Roberta Nilerud of Canonical has announced that their cloud storage service – Ubuntu One – has hit the one million users mark.

Ubuntu One is a cloud storage service from Canonical that is very tightly integrated into Ubuntu. Although Ubuntu One is installed by default in Ubuntu, it is also available on Windows and Android. Ubuntu One is also used to store the music bought from the Ubuntu One Music Store.

Announcing the milestone, Canonical has also decided to change the plans on offer. Initially, 2 GB of storage was provided to everyone for free. Now, they have announced that they are more than doubling that to 5 GB. Current users of Ubuntu One will see their store size upgraded automatically.

Canonical has also changed the earlier Mobile plan to the Music Streaming plan. With the Music Streaming plan, users will get 20 GB of storage and unlimited music streaming to their Android and iOS device for $3.99/month. The Android app is already available in the Market (check out our review of the app here) and the iOS app is coming soon.

Reports have come out of Japan that indicate that the iPhone 5 has just started initial production and is slated for release in Q3 of this year. We all knew when the new iPhone 5 would be released, it’s usually about the same time each year but we didn’t know specific details about the phone. The new phone will come with a 4-inch capacitive touch screen as well as a metal chassis to help with antenna sensitivity. It looks like Apple is trying to correct the antenna issue that was uncovered as the iPhone 4 was released last year. The phone will also contain Apples A5 dual-core chip the same as which is inside the new iPad 2.

The new iPhone 5 is also said to be equipped with an “induction pay” or “wave and pay” technology that will allow consumers to use their phones to make purchases at establishments. This technology is made possible by the NFC or “Near Field Communication” chip installed in the phone. The technology is very similar to the current “pay pass” technology that we have on many credit cards today. With this addition to the iPhone 5, you will always be carrying around a sort of “e-wallet” that should speed up payments at enabled establishments. This new news also confirms many rumors that we wrote about earlier.

The drugstore Walgreens has an Android Tablet called the Maylong M-150 on their site for sale for only $99. They claim that the tablet sports a 7-inch LCD screen, and runs the Android operating system but does not state which version. The rest of the specifications are very nice if true for the price, they are as follows:

One of the main problems I have with this tablet is the picture, take a good look what do you see. It is a sideways picture of an iPad and not the actual tablet that they claim to sell. I doubt that Walgreens would sell a fake tablet but they need to actually use the correct picture.
The specifications specify an ARM9 CPU but not the clock speed. Upon searching for the processor I found that it could be around 533 MHZ which isnt too bad and I even found asimilar tablet for the same price. The tablet I found is a TOLOVO which runs Android 1.6 which is quite possible the version of Android that the Walgreens tablet may be running.
